Freelance Type Rating Instructor (TRI) and SyNthetic Flight Instructor (SFI)
Ian Garbett, Helitrax SLU’s own Type Rating Instructor (TRI) and Synthetic Flight Instructor (SFI), is available for freelance helicopter instruction to support Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) and private helicopter owners. Instruction is delivered personally by Ian Garbett, acting as an individual TRI / SFI, either within an ATO training environment or directly for private owner operations, depending on the training requirement.
Type Rating Instructor (TRI & SFI) – EC145/BK117
Ian Garbett provides TRI and SFI instruction on the following helicopter types:
- Airbus EC145 C2
- Airbus H145 D2 / D3 (SP and MP) – EASA & UK CAA
- Airbus EC155 (coming soon)
Instruction may include initial type ratings, recurrent training, differences training and proficiency flying, delivered in accordance with the applicable training context.

Freelance TRI / SFI Instruction for ATOs
Ian Garbett is available to act as a freelance TRI / SFI within an ATO, providing instruction on approved courses where an external instructor resource is required. This may include type-specific instruction, short-term instructor coverage or planned training support integrated into an ATO’s existing syllabus.
Instruction is delivered personally and consistently, ensuring continuity throughout the training programme and avoiding the introduction of unfamiliar or unverified instructional resources.
TRI / SFI Instruction for Private Owners & Self-Funded Pilots
Ian Garbett also provides freelance TRI / SFI instruction directly to private helicopter owners and self-funded pilots, supporting aircraft transitions, recurrent training and aircraft-specific familiarisation.
Training is tailored to the aircraft type, operational profile and experience level of the pilot, and may be delivered alongside private or yacht-based operations. Where appropriate, instruction can be aligned with Helitrax training solutions for self-funded pilots to support structured and well-managed training pathways.
