New EC145 Type rating instructor (TRI)
We’re delighted to announce that Capt Ian Garbett has recently qualified as a Type Rating Instructor (TRI) on the EC145 (BK117) helicopter, approved by both EASA and the UK CAA. Ian has over eight years flying the EC145 on three different variants (C2, D2 and D3). This is a significant step forward for Ian personally and Helitrax, increasing EC145 training capability and the availability of services we can offer.
The course was delivered by the team at Copter Safety, whose structured approach, high standards, and professional delivery made the experience both challenging and rewarding. We want to express our thanks to everyone involved for helping make this milestone possible. Copter Safety’s facilities and instruction were key in equipping Ian with the tools and confidence needed to deliver expert EC145 instruction.

Self-Funded Pilots training solutions
Ian’s new qualification directly supports Helitrax’s commitment to helping self-improver pilots progress efficiently and affordably. With another now fully qualified as a TRI on the EC145(BK117), Helitrax is better positioned to offer value-for-money type rating and refresher training. This is especially helpful for those looking to invest in their professional development.
We understand that training is a significant personal and financial commitment—particularly for self-funded pilots aiming to expand their type qualifications or maintain currency. By increasing our in-house TRI capabilities, we can offer more flexible and cost-effective training options to suit your goals and schedule.

In addition to supporting Helitrax SLU clients directly, Capt Garbett’s new qualification increases Helitrax SLU’s freelance TRI service availability to ATOs across the UK and Europe.
